December 2015

Townsed's Warbler Townsend's Warbler

Another bird that should be in Mexico by now (along with the Rufous Hummingbird below) is this Townsend's Warbler. Thanks to Douglas Planadin for sending us these photos.

Barred Owl Barred Owl

Brian McGowan photographed this Barred Owl last year in North Surrey. The owl must have decided Brian's back deck was a nice place to chill out for a bit.

Barred Owl

Another Barred Owl sighting! This photo was taken by Karen Loverock in Upper Lynn Valley. I highly doubt the owl is interested in that finch feeder hanging there.

Common Raven Gray Jay

Thanks to the Rabiner-Smiths for these photos of a couple of handsome Common Ravens and a very curious Gray Jay (a.k.a. Whiskey Jack).

Anna's Hummingbird

Mike Chiu sent us this photo of an Anna's Hummingibrd taken in Ranch Park, Coquitlam.

November 2015

Northern Pygmy-Owl Northern Pygmy-Owl

Janice Crook got a shock when this little Northern Pygmy-Owl crashed into her window. It had caught a chickadee and obviously wasn't watching where it was going! After a few minutes rest the owl flew away.

Anna's Hummingbird

Clara Coles sent us this amazing shot taken by Patricia Bannerman of an Anna's Hummingbird in flight.

Evening Grosbeak Evening Grosbeak

Douglas Planidin was excited to see a new bird at his feeder, this Evening Grosbeak!

Rufous Hummingbird

While his buddies are probably all in Mexico by now, this Rufous Hummingbird is still frequenting Robin Merrifield's feeders in Sechelt. The Rufous is in good company with at least 15 Anna's Hummingbirds all going to the same feeders.

American Dipper Pileated Woodpecker

Grey Catbird Northern Pygmy-Owl

What a great set of birds sent to us by Cornelia van Berkel in Sechelt.

Downy Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker

Downy Woodpecker and Northern Flicker Downy Woodpecker and Steller's Jay

It looks like the suet feeders in Perry Edwards' backyard are quite a hit with the Downy Woodpeckers (top row). They don't even mind sharing with the Northern Flickers (bottom row, left) and Steller's Jays (bottom row, right).

Yellow-shafted Flicker Yellow-shafted Flicker

Bob Chaworth-Musters had a unique visitor to his suet feeder in West Vancouver last December: this male Integrade Northern Flicker. The red "mustache" along with the gray face and brown crown are features of the western Red-shafted Flicker whereas the red nape crescent is a feature of the eastern and northern Yellow-shafted Flicker.

Chestnut-backed Chickadee Spotted Towhee

Mark Eburne took these lovely shots of a Chestnut-backed Chickadee (left) and a Spotted Towhee (right) in his back yard in Maple Ridge.

European Starling European Starling

Northern Flicker Northern Flicker

Steller's Jay Steller's Jay

These photos were captured by Perry Edwards' ADT "wildlife" camera. The birds were drawn in to his yard by his WBU feeders, but they also seem to like performing aerial displays for the camera.
