Hummingbirds in BC

There are more than 300 different species of hummingbird in the Western Hemisphere! Here in the Lower Mainland you are most likely to encounter two of those species, the Anna's Hummingbird (our resident hummingbird species) and the Rufous Hummingbird (a migratory species that winters in Mexico).

Feeding Hummingbirds

A hummingbird's diet consist of flower nectar (for carbohydrates) as well as small insects and insect eggs (for protein and other nutrients). You can help hummingbirds in your backyard by providing a mixture of sugar and water all year round. We recommend a ratio of 4 parts water to 1 part sugar.

Hummingbirds love to perch (and sometimes chickadees too!). Hummingbirds are very territorial and will guard their food source. Place the swing near your feeder (at the same height or higher than the feeder) and enjoy watching these little jewels up close.

Ant Moats

All of our WBU High Perch Hummingbird Feeders (with the exception of the Mini High Perch) already have a built-in ant moat. However, if your existing feeder doesn't come with one don't worry. You can add a separate ant moat to keep the ants out of any hummingbird feeder. Simply fill the moat with plain water (not sugar water) and hang it above your hummingbird feeder.
